The Days Pass

August 26th, 2010

Belatedly: Happy 61st birthday to my darling dad! Here he is with a spectacular gift he received from Tom and Tra (of course) Scott and Debbie (thanks to Jennie for the correction), photo courtesy of Mom. Happy birthday, Bussey!

In other news, it’s six days until I leave for Texas to meet Miss Abby (and to spend time with Lisa, of course!), and just seventeen days until half marathon number seven. It’s going to be an interesting race, as I was diagnosed with Achilles tendonitis a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been given the go-ahead to race, but I’ll be bringing plenty of ibuprofen along for the ride just in case. I’m certainly not expecting a PR, but here’s hoping I don’t get a DNF.

Here, at last, is a picture of me and work hubby JPo… well, sort of. Since he’s a very private guy, I’ve covered his head with a picture of Jared Padalecki instead. Ha!

I’ve been busy with work, workouts, Gilda’s (both Gang and Gala), and voice over work, but have still found plenty of time to do one of my favorite things: read. So, for no good reason, here’s a list of the last ten books I’ve read (starting with the one I’m currently working my way through):

  1. Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins.
  2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
  3. Flight of the Falcon by Daphne du Maurier.
  4. Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life by Bryan Lee O’Malley.
  5. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
  6. Why Girls Are Weird by Pamela Ribon.
  7. The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg.
  8. Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes.
  9. Emporium by Adam Johnson.
  10. Parasites Like Us by Adam Johnson.

The title of this post is inspired by the fact that I can’t believe summer is almost over, and yet I can’t wait for fall (Bradford reunion! Maine!). It’s from a poem called “Pursuit,” by Stephen Dobyns:

In such a way do the days pass -
a blend of stock car racing and the never
ending building of a gothic cathedral.

Saw this sign while out and about today. Every man (and woman) for themselves!

Drive-By Shootings

May 3rd, 2009

I’ve been meaning to post these for awhile, and now that I see I haven’t updated the site in ages, it seems like a good time. These are all photos that I took with my cell camera. Quality isn’t the best, but the moments were worth capturing! First, we have a man who was at the martini bar in Fort Lauderdale. Apparently, this is really how he dresses. I especially love the Davy Jones-circa-1966 hair!

Next is a shot of a martini that I drank last night. No, I didn’t eat the flower.

And here is one last shot from the Florida trip: A real-life (possibly the original) Boca Betty! She was even better from the front, but she was wily, and this was the best I could do:

Next we have a clever solution to the “we’ve run out of salt shakers and haven’t bothered to go pick up some new ones for a dollar at Wal-Mart” issue, courtesy of a Chinese restaurant in Dallas:

And this picture, of the clock at Soldiers & Sailors in Penn Yan, was taken in early December. As J.Po would say, “Global red alert! Abandon the planet!”

I’m not much of a car person, but certain things stand out even when you don’t normally notice vehicles. This was taken in the parking lot of the old Secret Wegmans on the corner of East Henrietta and Calkins. I’m sure there’s a “you can take the [blank] out of the [blank] joke” to be had here.

Finally, this picture was taken last fall, but the writing is (literally, I saw it the other day) still on the wall… of the underpass of Winton Road on the Canal Path. Fight the power! By spraypainting some stuff on an underpass wall!

A Room Without Windows

March 3rd, 2009

Here, randomly, is a list of the last ten books I’ve read:

  1. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
  2. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
  3. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
  4. Duma Key by Stephen King
  5. Just After Sunset by Stephen King
  6. The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon
  7. Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
  8. No Need for Speed by John Bingham
  9. The Complete Guide to Marathon Walking by Dave McGovern
  10. Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

The title of this post is from a quote by Horace Mann:

A house without books is like a room without windows.

Hear This, and Nothing More

September 3rd, 2008

So I came across the site called Wordle that creates a word cloud based on words you input or a site you link to. I linked to this site, and the image above is what Wordle created for me. You can click here to see a bigger version. I love that “miles” and “hills” are two of the biggest words in the cloud. Figures!

Mandy encouraged me to start reading the Twilight series, and while I don’t really have anything positive to say in terms of literary criticism, nevertheless I can’t seem to put the books down. One good thing that’s come out of it is the following quote, which is in the third book, Eclipse:

Hear this, and nothing more. Feel nothing but speed, nothing but the pull of muscle, sinew, and bone, working together in harmony as the miles disappeared behind me.

That nicely sums up much of my life right now.

In other news, hop on over to my friend Chris’s site, Geek Force Five, to see my take on the new 90210!

On the Road Again

July 31st, 2008

Tomorrow morning (every early) I’m off on another adventure – this time to visit Mandy in Washington, DC. Besides the requisite monument/memorial tourist stuff, we’re going to The Source with Allison to sample the fine cuisine of Mr. Drewno, and we’re going to catch a Washington Nationals game. Yay!

This picture has nothing to do with my trip, in case you hadn’t already figured that out. It was taken yesterday at work, when one of the boys needed a shot of a Field Engineer (which I’m not, but I play one very convincingly). Don’t I look all scientisty with my eye protection and my fancy blue coat? It totally cracks me up!

In Such a Way Do the Days Pass

June 29th, 2008

Another summer weekend over already. I took some photos today, and when I was thinking about posting them I thought, randomly, of a quote by Stephen Dobyns that I first read in a Stephen King book (I think it was Desperation):

In such a way do the days pass – a blend of stock car racing and the never ending building of a gothic cathedral.

The picture at the top of the post is from the garden that my neighbors, Janet and Lil, have planted around our back patio. Here’s another close-up of rain on leaves after this afternoon’s thunderstorm. I know it looks a lot like the shot I took at Mount Hope… Guess I’ve got a thing for raindrops lately!

And of course I had to include a picture of the Bean, who wore himself out helping me fold the laundry:

Girl Power!

April 16th, 2008

ali_tbl.jpg

Finally! Last night a woman won The Biggest Loser. Check out Ali, who lost 112 pounds and won $250,000 for her efforts. She’s amazing! I cannot get enough of this show. I think I’ll hang Ali’s picture on my fridge for a little inspiration!

I had my own moment of girl power this weekend… No, I didn’t lose 112 pounds (or win lots of money), but I did reset and reconfigure my wireless router. I even managed to get the Wii online. Yay for me! (Please, no snide comments from the tech-savvy engineers in the peanut gallery!)

skullmug.jpg

Finally, I have one sad bit of news to report. My skull mug (shown above) has held its last bit of sugar-free Kool-Aid. There’s a crack in the left eye – you can even see a little strawberry Kool-Aid seeping through (which just makes it more delightfully morbid, in my opinion). I have been using this mug, which was a Halloween gift from Sarah W-M, nearly every day for about two and a half years. Alas, time to find another purpose for it. Perhaps a lovely vase?
