Life Mapped Out

August 15th, 2010

I can’t believe how fast the summer if flying by. It’s only four weeks until the Rochester Half Marathon (which I will be participating in providing my stupid heel gets better), and just two and a half weeks until I fly down to Texas to spend time with Lisa and Abby. There’s been a lot going on the past few weeks, including seeing the Barenaked Ladies on the last stop of their summer tour at CMAC with Heather and Linds last night. It was a gorgeous summer night on the lawn, including fireworks from the Canandaigua pier. Above is a self-portrait of the three of us, and here are shots of Heather and me and Linds and me during the concert.

Last weekend, Linds and I drove out to the Genesee Country Museum for Little House on the Prairie day, where we got to meet and greet Almanzo Wilder himself, Mr. Dean Butler (who also played Buffy’s dad and is married to the woman who played Felice Martin on 90210. Multiple worlds collide!):

Today, the Sorensens paid a visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s for coffee. Here are a few pictures. First up, here’s Dad, Bob, Grandma, Mabe, Sarah, and Debbie:

Cousins! Donna, Howard, and Tracy:

And here’s Howard, with Dad showing off the walker/seat he’s going to need when he turns 61 on Thursday:

In other news, I’ve been booking more audio gigs, working out like mad with Jillian Michaels, and watching Supernatural, of course. I also found out that at the Gilda’s Gala on September 25th, I’m going to be receiving an award! Paul, Alex, and I are all receiving the Come As You Are Award, which “is given to an individual(s) demonstrating meritorious, outstanding or heroic distinctive personal involvement in the Gilda’s Club Community, positively affecting the lives of members living with a cancer experience. This/these individual(s) are welcoming to all, are involved in multiple facets of clubhouse activities and events, provide outreach to further the Gilda’s Club mission to new partners and contributes to keeping the red door open.” Time to buy a fancy new dress!

The title of this post is from the Bon Jovi song “Summertime” (so sue me, I like Jon Bon and the boys!):

I was a warm breeze with a cool tan,
Life mapped out on the back of my hand.

The Attempt

May 23rd, 2010

Yesterday Jennie and her Yates Greats teammates participated in a regional Special Olympics track and field event. Jennie came home with three medals: a silver in the softball throw, and golds in both the 100-meter walk and the 400-meter walk. Everyone on the team came home with at least one medal. Congratulations, Yates Greats! Above is a picture of Jennie crossing the finish line of the 100-meter walk. There are a bunch more photos from the day here. And here’s a short video of Jennie during the race – all smiles!

The title of this post comes from the Special Olympics motto:

Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

Delicious Ambiguity

April 30th, 2010

Tonight was the Gilda’s Club volunteer recognition dinner. I got recognized! (Thanks, Gilda’s staff.) It’s pretty random that I got involved with Gilda’s simply because I’d once walked a half marathon and they needed trainers for their new half marathon program, and now here we are, two years later. If it weren’t for Gilda’s, I wouldn’t know KPo, featured in this self-portrait (and of course he looks better than me!):

And I wouldn’t have Jojo in my life! What would I do without her?! Here she is, at long last:

The title of this post is from, of course, Gilda Radner:

Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.

Days of the Dead

I can’t believe it’s already November. Where did October go? Where did the year go?! Above is a picture I snapped on the walk I took with Mom, Bussey, and Jen this afternoon. The teeny pumpkin is cute, but I love the face on the one on the right.

We saw the month out with a bang – or, rather, with a boo! Friday night was Leah’s second annual Boo Bash. Linds and I went as Sam the butcher and Alice from The Brady Bunch, dead and frozen after getting trapped in the meat locker at Sam’s butcher shop. Brilliant idea courtesy of Linds!

Here’s another picture from the night: Leah, Jimmy S, and David P, aka The Disco Witch. There are a bunch more photos in the Boo Bash album here.

Finally, a very belated and very happy birthday to my darling mama. What more could a girl want on her special day other than potato chips? Oh, right: hot olives! Happy birthday, Mama!

Bachelors, Bachelors, Everywhere!

October 8th, 2009

Last night was the Find the One at One bachelor auction to benefit Gilda’s Club. Linds, Leah, Sarah S, and I went, and met up with Iron Beth, as well as the gals from the club. Above is a self-portait we took at One.

A ton of money was raised for Gilda’s, and both Leah and I managed to snag a bachelor. Wahoo! Here’s a picture of me with Daryl:

There are a bunch more photos in the (new) Fall 2009 album here (I have been having loads of trouble with Coppermine, so have installed Gallery – we’ll see how that goes), but here are a few more. First, Omar gives Linds a kiss to keep her still long enough for a photo:

Next, here’s me and Kimberly from The Breakfast Buzz (swiped the photo from MetroMix; the rest of their pics are here):

And, finally, proof that Sarah S and I have similar – and smashing – taste in footwear:

Come Find the One

September 1st, 2009

bachelorlogo

After the marathon (12 days!), the next big event at Gilda’s Club is a bachelor auction. It’s called Find the One at One (One is a nightclub here in Rochester), and I designed the logo for the event. Last night we interviewed potential bachelors, and I can say with confidence that any single ladies who happen to read my blog are definitely going to want to buy a ticket for this event! I Own This

mycar

It took sixty months, but at long last, this car is mine! :-)

Meanwhile, it’s unreal to think that it’s already the second week of August. We haven’t had much of a summer, weather-wise, but I’ve been busy with the Gang (five weeks until my fifth half marathon!), work, writing, and family stuff. A few weeks ago, I got together with the girls from Gilda’s to say goodbye to our beloved Patience. We met for bowling and pizza (I am a fantastic Wii bowler, and a really horrid real-life bowler). Here’s a shot of Patience, me, and Julia at Clover Lanes. There are a bunch more pictures in the Summer 2009 album here.

One Day at a Time

July 20th, 2009

IMG_1754

On July 13, Dad celebrated thirty years of sobriety. Thirty years! To celebrate that momentous occasion, as well as his upcoming 60th birthday in August, we had a 30/60 party on Sunday afternoon. The clouds cleared off, the sun shown, and friends and family gathered to help us wish Dad well for his next thirty years. The picture above is of Bussey and his cake. There are a ton of pictures from the day here. Congratulations, Dad!

The More I Have of It

March 29th, 2009

Hard to believe it’s almost April; also hard to believe it’s been two weeks since I’ve last posted. And yet, here we are. I’ve spent many, many (non-working) hours during the past few weeks working feverishly on the graphic design for a 48-page program for Gilda’s Club Fashion Show, which was held on this rainy Sunday afternoon at the Hyatt downtown. The image above is from an inside spread of the program (I designed the ad on the right); below is a shot of the front cover.

When it comes to raffles and prizes, I am the complete opposite of Jennie, which is to say, I never win anything. Until today! I was the top bidder on a hand-made purse (yes, yes, I have another purse), and I also won a giant basket of Bath & Body Works products in the raffle at the Fashion Show. Here’s a picture of my winnings (Chavo was very interested in the Easter grass that filled the basket!):

Let’s see… Also in the past few weeks, I’ve been to a Twilight party (ha!) and a jewelry party, seen Jersey Boys with Aunt Tra and Sweeney Todd with Sarah S. (welcome to Roch!), Lindsay, and her sister, Jen (so strange to be back at Geva again–I expected Zerbe to come slouching around the corner at any moment!), done voice over work at EK, written another story, worked on my novel a little, spent time with the family, and purchased a coffee table. It opens up into a bigger table, which is perfect for a girl with a living room that barely fits her giant treadmill, much less, you know, grown-up furniture! Here’s a picture:

I’ll try not to let two weeks pass before the next update. There’s lots to look forward to in April, including a new neighbor (hi, Linds!), the planning of this year’s Gilda’s Gang (let me know if you want to train to walk a half marathon!), a visit from Justin and Mandy, and RENT!

The title of this post is from a quote by Thomas Jefferson:

I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
