The Most Guts

April 30th, 2008

cmmofficial.jpg

The title of this post is from a quote by Steve Prefontaine:

Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts.

The picture above is from the official Country Music Marathon photos, which are finally online. You can see from the grimace of pain that I had a lot of guts that morning. Ha! There are more pictures of me here and shots of Lisa here. Look at that girl sprint!

Update: Here is a fantastic picture of Lisa crossing the finish line, with a big grin on her face. Yay, Lis!

My goal was to complete the Country Music Half Marathon in under three hours. And as you can see from the title of this post, I did it with a whopping 19 seconds to spare! I’m super proud, considering how incredibly difficult the course was. Hill after endless hill. And I even made an unscheduled pit stop around mile 7. So all things considered, not bad at all! The picture above is of Lisa and me after the race. She ran the whole thing in 3:55:43. If the finish lines had been at the same location, we would have crossed at about the same time, considering I didn’t cross the start line until almost a full hour after the gun.

It was a rainy start to the day, but turned out cloudy and not too warm. It was just insane to be there with so many people – 30,000 runners and 100,000 spectators! I just cannot express to you how hard those hills were. I’m ready for my next race, but I think I’ll do it in Texas, where they are known for their lovely flat courses! The picture above is of me and Lisa in our matching CMM jackets. Ogden Street twinkies!

A quick recap of the rest of the trip: On Friday Lisa and I went out to the Opryland area, walked the hotel, shopped at the Grand Ole Opry Shop, and (of course) did some shoe shopping at Opry Mills. We lunched on the lanai at Dalts, and then relaxed on Ansley Lane until Mom and Dad arrived from Florida. We carbo-loaded with spaghetti, and then tried to sleep. Got up at 4:30 so uncle Steve could drive us up to Centennial Park for the start of the race. On Saturday afternoon, we lazed around (and hobbled if we were forced to walk around), ate a ton of food, and spent time with Liz, Charlotte, Leigh Anna, Ran, Crystelle, and Sol (and the family, of course). Here’s a super cute picture of Leigh, me, and Liz:

On Sunday it was cold and rainy, and we were still pretty crippled, so we spent the day eating and watching NASCAR (c’mon, we were in the South!). Yesterday Mom, Dad, and I drove the 14 hours home to NY. And now I’m relaxing on the couch with Chavo. I’m happy to report I only have mild aches and pains! Here’s a picture of the medal that I got. Gorgeous!

I promised Lisa this picture would go on the blog, so here’s a lovely shot of me in a cowboy hat with some guns at a shop on Second Avenue. Yee haw!

There are a ton more pictures in the Nashville 2008 album here. No pictures of us crossing the finish line or on the course yet, but as soon as I get them, I’ll post them!

Music in Music City

secondfiddle.jpg

Lisa is here! Yesterday we went to the Second Fiddle on Broadway to hear some live country (and a bit of rock) music. Here’s a picture from inside the bar.

It’s been a busy few days. Had lunch on Tuesday with John, Sandra, and Crystal, up in remote Springfield, Tennessee. Saw Ran and met his son. On Wednesday I spent a wonderful two hours on Coronado Court with Linda, and then met Liz and Charlotte for lunch at Bosco’s in trafficky Hillsboro Village. Then we hightailed it out to Murfreesboro, where we proceeded to eat too much, laugh a ton, and watch Charlotte take her first real steps! The night was capped off with way too much ice cream from Marble Slab (are you sensing a trend here?).

Yesterday Lisa arrived at 9:30, and we were on the go from there. After a good Southern breakfast/brunch at Cracker Barrel, we hit the Health and Fitness Expo at the Convention Center to get our timing chips, bib numbers, and lots of free goodies. We also spent some cash getting lots of marathon merchandise, including matching fleeces. We’re so cute. Ha! Wandered around the riverfront and Second Avenue, had a beer at the Second Fiddle, and then drove out to the Loveless Cafe for some biscuits and fried foods (I won’t even tell you what Lisa ate!). We capped off the night with more live music at the Tin Roof in Cool Springs.

Lisa was dying to find a pink cowboy hat for the race, and boy did she! Check out this stylin’ number, complete with tiara!

So, the race is tomorrow. 30,000 people. 100,000 spectators. 13.1 miles (double that for Lis!). Wish us luck!

(Lots more pictures from the week to come – probably after I get home.)

The Countdown Is On!

cmmsign.jpg

It’s only four days until the Country Music Marathon! Here’s a sign that Mike, Chris, and I spotted yesterday afternoon (after gorging ourselves on burgers and fries at Five Guys).

Spent a lot of the day yesterday with the cousins, and then had dinner with Michelle and Suttree (that’s him munching on the table at Outback – he definitely takes after his dad!). Today I’m off to meet John, Sandra, and Crystal in Springfield. An APG reunion! There are a few pictures from the trip here. Lots more to come!

Last Days at EK: Part Two

April 19th, 2008

anghug2.jpg

Yesterday was my last day at EK (except for the contract audio and video work I’ll be doing). Chad forced me to work for a large portion of the day – how could he?! But we made up for it with a swingin’ happy hour at The Distillery. The picture above is an actual, untouched photo of Angie hugging me. Shocking, I know. I guess she really appreciated the donation of the MacGyver Blvd sign! Lots more photos of the fun can be found here.

Tomorrow I’m off for 10 days in NashVegas. Yee haw!

Last Days at EK: Part One

I was going to wait until the weekend to post pictures of my last days (as a regular employee, that is!) at EK, but this picture of me and Cory is just too cute to not post right now. Click here for a few more pictures from the day. Lots more to come after tomorrow’s happy hour!

Girl Power!

April 16th, 2008

ali_tbl.jpg

Finally! Last night a woman won The Biggest Loser. Check out Ali, who lost 112 pounds and won $250,000 for her efforts. She’s amazing! I cannot get enough of this show. I think I’ll hang Ali’s picture on my fridge for a little inspiration!

I had my own moment of girl power this weekend… No, I didn’t lose 112 pounds (or win lots of money), but I did reset and reconfigure my wireless router. I even managed to get the Wii online. Yay for me! (Please, no snide comments from the tech-savvy engineers in the peanut gallery!)

skullmug.jpg

Finally, I have one sad bit of news to report. My skull mug (shown above) has held its last bit of sugar-free Kool-Aid. There’s a crack in the left eye – you can even see a little strawberry Kool-Aid seeping through (which just makes it more delightfully morbid, in my opinion). I have been using this mug, which was a Halloween gift from Sarah W-M, nearly every day for about two and a half years. Alas, time to find another purpose for it. Perhaps a lovely vase?

Thank You, Andy!

I got a Wii! This isn’t the best picture, but it’s a cute shot of Chav checking out the new toy. Life is going to be full of bowling and… Mario. Bring it on, Big Al. Wheee!

Trial Run… er, Walk

April 7th, 2008

cmm_chip.jpg

On Saturday my training plan had me scheduled to do 13 miles. So I figured, why not throw in that extra .1, and check my complete half marathon time? Well, I did 13:16/mile, finishing up in 2 hours and 54 minutes. If you’re keeping track, that’s 11 minutes faster than I completed the Rochester half back in September. Wahoo! The Country Music Marathon is only 19 days away… which means my trip to Nashville is only 13 days away. Yee haw!

Q, Sir Q

April 1st, 2008

Maybe this has something to do with the fact that I accidentally had the registration feature turned off, but a few days ago, Qualen became the first person to comment on Font of Nothing 2.0. So, in honor of that distinction, I thought I’d post a picture of the two of us when I took my trip to Dallas a few weeks ago. Here’s to you, Q! (Click here to see more of Lisa’s pictures from the trip.)

bandq.jpg

And here is something else I’ve been meaning to post since St. Patrick’s Day, but I kept forgetting. This is possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen – Swedish Chef, Animal, and Beaker singing “Danny Boy.” The Beaker part makes me cry, I laugh so hard. Click here to watch!

dannyboy.jpg

Tomorrow I am off on my final Element K work trip (more on that another day); Chad and I are headed for exotic Parsippany, New Jersey. I know, I know, you’re all jealous!

Finally: Happy birthday to my friend Michelle who is celebrating in Nashville today with her boys, Brent and Suttree. Here’s a picture of the happy family (plus me!) from last summer:

Happy birthday, ma belle!
