In Such a Way Do the Days Pass

June 29th, 2008

Another summer weekend over already. I took some photos today, and when I was thinking about posting them I thought, randomly, of a quote by Stephen Dobyns that I first read in a Stephen King book (I think it was Desperation):

In such a way do the days pass – a blend of stock car racing and the never ending building of a gothic cathedral.

The picture at the top of the post is from the garden that my neighbors, Janet and Lil, have planted around our back patio. Here’s another close-up of rain on leaves after this afternoon’s thunderstorm. I know it looks a lot like the shot I took at Mount Hope… Guess I’ve got a thing for raindrops lately!

And of course I had to include a picture of the Bean, who wore himself out helping me fold the laundry:

Summer Afternoon

June 27th, 2008

It’s June, strawberries are in season, and that means jam! The family will be happy to hear that this afternoon I made three batches of Grandma’s sweet, delicious jam. That’s 27 jars, so there ought to be enough to go around. Above is a close-up of the finished product. Below is a picture of the work in progress.

I’ve signed up for my second Rochester half marathon, which will be on September 14th. I’m hoping to be able to run a good portion of it, in preparation for those 26.2 miles in Houston (which seemed so far away when I signed up…).

And because it seems to somehow sum up summer (how’s that for alliteration?), here’s a picture of the kitchen curtains blowing in the summer breeze at Grandma and Grandpa’s.

The title of this post comes from a quote by Henry James:

Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.

Chavo Is Ten

June 18th, 2008

Hard to believe Chavo’s been in my life for almost a decade! (Also hard to believe that I’ve been blogging for two years now… the first post was “Chavo Is Eight.”) Indoor cats tend to live longer than outdoor, so here’s to another 10 years together. Happy birthday, Bean!

Happy Father’s Day

June 15th, 2008

It’s been a super busy weekend, and I’m just too tired to come up with a clever post title! Here’s a picture of Dad, Scott, Grandpa, and Tom, the fathers who were in attendance at Sunday coffee. And here is a picture of a soon-to-be-dad, Cory, with his wife Debbie, from their baby shower in Brighton this morning.

I took some “artsy” pictures at Grandma and Grandpa’s this afternoon, and here is my favorite. It’s a macro of a glass dish Grandma has in the living room. Debbie told me what it’s called, but it’s already slipped my mind. Which just goes to show I’m definitely a Richmond!

And this last photo is for Justin. Look, the rainbow ends at Blockbuster! :-)

Texas in New York

June 14th, 2008

Wondering why we suffered 90+ degree temps for several days over the past two weeks? That’s because Justin came to visit, and he brought the Dallas weather with him! Here’s a picture of the two of us, nicely toasted after a day at the pool in PY!

This was Justin’s first visit to upstate New York, so of course we had to take a trip up to Niagara Falls. After a walk by the Falls and lunch on Clifton Hill, Justin bought a pack of cigarettes… for $12.50! But he made up for it (and then some) by winning $60 on the nickel slots at the casino. Here’s a picture of Justin outside the Guinness World Records museum:

We had dinner and Wii bowled with Linds and Jena, shopped, spent a day in PY with the family, ate out way too much, got manis and pedis, watched some movies, and even spent a morning at a tattoo parlor. I got my old purple rose re-done (thanks, Leigh Anna!), but Justin didn’t get a chance to get his ink. Guess he’ll have to recruit Lisa for a trip to Gizmo’s!

There are lots of photos from the trip here. Come back soon, Justin!

And the Silver Medal Goes to…

June 1st, 2008

Jennie Snyder! Jennie and a team of athletes from Yates County were part of the regional NYS Special Olympics held at RIT this Saturday. Jennie took fourth place in the softball throw, and earned a shiny silver medal in the 100-meter walk. The Yates Greats took home a ton of medals and ribbons. Here’s a picture of the athletes:

To see a too-short, very blurry, completely awesome video of Jennie in the 100-meter event, click here. And you can see all of my pictures from the day here. Great job, Jen!
