All the Nothing You Want

December 31st, 2008

Happy last day of 2008! To celebrate the end of the year, here’s an ode to my darling mama, who retires… on Friday! There was a great article about her in the Chronicle this week. It’s pretty long, so I’m linking to it here. But here are a few excerpts:

On Dec. 31, Yates County Public Health Director Lauren Snyder is retiring.  In her 32 and a half year career she has seen many changes in the department and in the world of health care.

As a life-long resident of the community, she has used her knowledge and leadership in the field of pubic health, nursing and public administration to bring Yates County into the next century of care.

During her career, Snyder says the biggest challenge has been how to accomplish  public health for the community with the least amount of funding.  She says her motto has been, “Dream it up first and then look for funding.”  She looks at what is needed and then sets out to figure out how to get it.

After years of reading up on new diseases, going over medical alert bulletins and piles of other health related material, Snyder is looking forward to reading just for pleasure.

Spending more time with her family is also on her list.  Her husband Alan (Herbie) retired last April from Cargill.

“It has been a privilege to be a public servant and I have truly enjoyed working for the people of Yates County,” says Snyder.

There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.

Now there is, Mama. Congratulations!

And So This Is Christmas

December 25th, 2008

Merry Christmas! Here is possibly the cutest picture ever of Grandpa and Grandma, taken on Christmas Eve at Scott and Debbie’s. We had a wonderful night of way too much food, fun presents, and good times with the family. There are tons and tons of pictures here, but I thought I’d throw in a few more for good measure here on the blog. Here’s a self-portrait of Kate, me, and Sarah:

And here’s a great shot of Jeff, Adam, and Aaron:

Here’s a shot of Mom and Dad in their Christmas best:

And here’s Jennie, very very happy to have received a Tony Stewart calendar from Bussey. I guess there’s no accounting for taste! Just kidding, Jen.

Finally, on Christmas Day we had a guest appearance by Ms. Flynn:

Be sure to check out all the pictures – there are a couple of pages of them. Hope everyone had a very merry holiday with their loved ones. And here’s a special Christmas wish to Brenda. Love you, Old Favorite Cousin!

Spend the Afternoon

December 23rd, 2008

Jamie took this picture of me at work yesterday, and said I should put it on my blog, so here it is. I have no idea why a super up-close shot would cause me to look like I have a wonky eye, but there you have it! Here are a couple of other photos I snapped during a shoot in the lab:

In holiday news, this day always makes me think of a song Jennie and I used to listen to when we were little, “The Day Before the Night Before Christmas.” I always wondered, did that mean the 23rd of December, or the day of the 24th? Confusing thoughts for a little kid, let me tell ya! Here’s a close-up of some of the dozens and dozens of cookies I baked on Sunday while staying out of the blowing snow:

Oh, and here’s the requisite Bean shot!

Spend the afternoon. You can’t take it with you.

To All My Southern Friends…

December 19th, 2008

Come on, you know you want to visit New York!

We Start and End

December 18th, 2008

Jeff’s home! Last night he, Sarah, Meg, Kate, and I had dinner and then hung out at the house for awhile. (Wish Aaron could have joined us… maybe next time.) Above is a pic of me and Mr. Swarthout. Please note my head is not twice as big as Jeff’s – it’s just closer to the camera, I swear! And here’s a picture of Sarah, Meggie, and Katlin.

One last shot of Jeff. Is that a standard military issue baby blue headband?

Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family.

Good Advice

December 18th, 2008

In direct contradiction to yesterday’s post regarding my desire to look like Biggest Loser Michelle, here’s a super close-up of a Christmas cupcake that I took yesterday, as well as a great quote from Erma Bombeck. Hey now, it’s Christmas. We’ll care about what we eat on January 2nd, right? :-D

Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.

Sign Me Up!

December 17th, 2008

Last night, Michelle became the second female Biggest Loser. She completely deserved it, as she was the only finalist who wasn’t a backstabbing wretch! And those are just a few of the words I’d use to describe Heba and (especially) Vicky. Check Michelle out. She’s amazing! I’m thinking of gaining 100 pounds just so I can go on the show and have Jillian and Bob whip me into this kind of shape. Or maybe I can convince my boss that I need to cut back on my workload so I can work out for six hours a day?

Speaking of working out, the Houston Marathon is a mere 32 days away. Ahhh! I have been training oh-so-faithfully on my treadmill, but I have no idea how all that work will translate into pace on race day. Hopefully Justin and his long legs won’t be too far ahead of me!

In Every Picture

December 14th, 2008

Went to PY yesterday to (belatedly) celebrate Kate’s 20th birthday, and took a few pictures while I was there. So I’ll let the photos do most of the talking for this post. But first, click here to check out a little video of Grandpa that I took yesterday. (If the video doesn’t play in your browser, you can right-click and save it to your desktop before viewing.) Warning: It’s rated PG-13. :-)

First, here’s a picture of birthday girl Kate, posing with Jennie and one of Jen’s original “Fat Cat” t-shirts:

Next, here’s a blurry close-up of Emmett (aka Lou) at Mom and Dad’s:

And now, several shots I took around the house on Ogden Street. Birds on the birdfeeder:

A pot of poinsettias on the front porch:

Bow, snow, and Snyder sign:

Growing Up Is Optional

December 7th, 2008

Another year (and a few days) older. It was a busy week filled with family, friends, presents, phone calls, and – of course – chicken and biscuits! The photo above was taken by Debbie at coffee this afternoon. The Christmas apron is a gift from Tra, while Debbie provided the spider (it’s on my shoulder) and spooky sign. Who says you can’t get Halloween presents in December? As further proof, I offer you a photo of possibly the best. present. ever. It’s a little wind-up Michael Myers! (Thanks to Sarah W-M for the tiny delight.)

And here are some pictures from late November that I finally got off Mom and Dad’s camera (these are for you, Brenda!). First, a photo of Dad and his big sister Phyllis:

And next, Phyllis with Andy, who does still exist. :-)

Finally, here’s a shot of Jennie with Emmie Lou. Looks like she’s working some kind of magic spell on the cat. I wouldn’t be surprised!

Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
