January 22nd, 2009

While I didn’t expect to hit a PR in Houston, I also didn’t expect to do worse than I did in the blazing heat of the Rochester Half 2008. Alas! I could have titled this post “How Not to Walk a Half Marathon.” Basically, everything that could go wrong, did. I didn’t eat enough the night before the race, didn’t hydrate enough, and slept for only about an hour. What a nightmare! Then I started off way too fast, trying to keep up with Long Legs Whittaker… We did a 12-minute first mile. By mile seven I was reeling on my feet, and by mile ten I was shivering and had goosebumps even though it was 70 degrees. Yikes! I was really dehydrated and was probably suffering from hypoglycemia. Ironically, a roll of Life Savers may have saved my life. Ha! So, I know now to eat way more pasta, drink way more water, sleep without someone who snores, and walk alone. Lessons learned!

Aside from those hours of hell, Texas was fun! Lisa qualified for Boston in 2010, and Kyle qualified for 2009. Congrats to both! The first picture is of Lisa, Justin, and me standing in the super-short port-a-potty line before the race, taken with my cell phone. And the picture above is of our bibs. (It was awesome to have my name printed on it, so total strangers could shout personal encouragement to me as I was dragging myself along the course!) And here’s a picture of the three of us with all of our Houston swag, medals included:

When I first crossed that finished line and hobbled across the convention center to get my medal and finisher’s t-shirt, I vowed I would never do another half marathon for the rest of my life. Four days later, I’m starting to think that might have been a bit premature. We’ll see! More pictures from the weekend here. And here’s one last shot, taken on the course. Clearly before my physical breakdown. Ha! (You can see more official pictures of me, Mrs. Wesneski, Mr. Freeman, Mr. Wills, and Mr. Whittaker by going here.)

Yee Haw!

Lace up your walking (or running) shoes, ladies and gentlemen… the plane for Texas leaves in the morning! After a few days of rest and relaxation (and pizza) in Dallas with Lisa and Justin, we’ll be off to Houston for the marathon and half marathon with the Freemans and the Wills. Wish us luck – especially Lisa, who is using this race to qualify for Boston. Go, Lis! As for me, I’m walking as fast as my short little legs can carry me away from these wretched single-digit temps. See ya, New York! (If you want to track my progress on race day, which is Sunday, you can do that here.)

In a sad (for me, at least) bit of news, Prison Break officially got the axe. Le sigh. Well, that doesn’t mean I can’t post random cast pictures, now does it? And to prove my point, here’s a photo of Dom and Wenty, trying to figure out what they’re going to do next in their careers. Thankfully, the lovely and talented William Fichtner already has a new show lined up. Now we just have to get T-Bag some work…

Two Doctors

January 7th, 2009

I somehow misplaced a hundred miles! Hmm. Anyway, I’ve walked 200 miles since I last posted about my trip across the country on the TransAmerica trail, just crossing the 1500-mile mark tonight. Here’s the view with .48 miles to go to Ash Grove, Missouri. It’s a lovely day on the trail – not frozen and windy like it is here in the ROC.

Eleven days til Houston! I know I haven’t even crossed the start line yet, much less the finish line, but I’m already starting to think, What’s next? I’ve been planning on doing the Rochester Half in the fall with Gilda’s Gang, but then I found this: the Maine Coast Half Marathon. The course runs right along Long Sands Beach. Sign me up! And don’t you think it would be a good idea to sign my mama up, too? :-)

I have two doctors, my left leg and my right.

Which is also a good excuse for this:

Enjoy Being Four

January 4th, 2009

We’re only a few days into the new year, but I’m happy to say that 2009 has been filled with visits with Matthew Charles! Here’s a picture of the two us from last night. I think I will take this is a sign that the rest of 2009 is going to be as fun and laugh-filled as that moment!

Here is the sweetest picture of Matthew and Bussey about to share a kiss on New Year’s Day. Click here for more photos of the fun with the Merrills.

Two weeks from today is the race in Houston. I’m not nervous, because I refuse to let myself be. Justin and I are going to cross that finish line no matter how long it takes us. This is going to be a fun race, and if there’s a PR thrown in the mix, then that will just be a bonus. See ya soon, Justin, Lis, and Q!

The prime purpose of being four is to enjoy being four – of secondary importance is to prepare for being five.
