The More I Have of It

March 29th, 2009

Hard to believe it’s almost April; also hard to believe it’s been two weeks since I’ve last posted. And yet, here we are. I’ve spent many, many (non-working) hours during the past few weeks working feverishly on the graphic design for a 48-page program for Gilda’s Club Fashion Show, which was held on this rainy Sunday afternoon at the Hyatt downtown. The image above is from an inside spread of the program (I designed the ad on the right); below is a shot of the front cover.

When it comes to raffles and prizes, I am the complete opposite of Jennie, which is to say, I never win anything. Until today! I was the top bidder on a hand-made purse (yes, yes, I have another purse), and I also won a giant basket of Bath & Body Works products in the raffle at the Fashion Show. Here’s a picture of my winnings (Chavo was very interested in the Easter grass that filled the basket!):

Let’s see… Also in the past few weeks, I’ve been to a Twilight party (ha!) and a jewelry party, seen Jersey Boys with Aunt Tra and Sweeney Todd with Sarah S. (welcome to Roch!), Lindsay, and her sister, Jen (so strange to be back at Geva again–I expected Zerbe to come slouching around the corner at any moment!), done voice over work at EK, written another story, worked on my novel a little, spent time with the family, and purchased a coffee table. It opens up into a bigger table, which is perfect for a girl with a living room that barely fits her giant treadmill, much less, you know, grown-up furniture! Here’s a picture:

I’ll try not to let two weeks pass before the next update. There’s lots to look forward to in April, including a new neighbor (hi, Linds!), the planning of this year’s Gilda’s Gang (let me know if you want to train to walk a half marathon!), a visit from Justin and Mandy, and RENT!

I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

It’s Spring Fever

March 15th, 2009

Happy Ides of March! And happiest of birthdays to two of my favorite people in the whole world, Justin and Cory! <3

It was a beautiful blue-sky day, and Mom, Dad, Jennie, and I took a walk down part of the Outlet Trail in the bright sunshine. I snapped a few pictures at the rundown playground near the boat launch; that’s where the picture above and the one below came from.

Between the boat launch and the ball field, there’s a little bridge over a stream, and the sunshine was very pretty on the water:

Here’s a snapshot of something green just starting to emerge from the ground in Mom and Dad’s backyard:

And, finally, here’s a long overdue shot of Chavo, wrapped up like a babushka in the Kennebunk blanket that Lindsay oh-so-kindly left on the love seat last weekend:

(Side note to Linds: Good luck tomorrow!)

The title of this post comes from a quote by Mark Twain:

It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want–oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!

A Room Without Windows

March 3rd, 2009

Here, randomly, is a list of the last ten books I’ve read:

  1. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
  2. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
  3. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
  4. Duma Key by Stephen King
  5. Just After Sunset by Stephen King
  6. The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon
  7. Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
  8. No Need for Speed by John Bingham
  9. The Complete Guide to Marathon Walking by Dave McGovern
  10. Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

The title of this post is from a quote by Horace Mann:

A house without books is like a room without windows.

Someone Like You

March 1st, 2009

Yes, I already posted about Jennie’s birthday, but as usually happens, her special day turned into a special week! Today we all gathered at Grandma and Grandpa’s for cake and presents. Here’s a shot of Jennie with a gift from Meghan – a framed photo of Tony Stewart’s new car, taken at the Daytona 500. You sure know how to win a girl’s heart, Meg!

The picture above is one I’ve been meaning to take for months. This empty sweet corn stand sits off 14A north of Hall. I love the abandoned look of it in the middle of the wintry field. Today I finally pulled over and got this photo. Then, at G&G’s, I took this macro of a jar of M&Ms:

And finally, on the way back to Rochester through Canandaigua, I was stopped at a light and noticed how the sunset lit the face of this church, so I snapped this shot through my windshield:

The title of this post is from a great sister quote (author unknown):

It was nice growing up with someone like you – someone to lean on, someone to count on… someone to tell on!
