Gang Race

July 30th, 2009

Last Sunday, several Gang members headed to Spencerport for the Aurora House Five Mile Race with Pace. I had a very slow first two miles, but a fast last three, and finished with 1:13:05. Yeah, that made me last in the Women’s Open category, but I’ll take it! Above is a picture of the Gang members, with me in the middle, number 605. We are 10 weeks into the training already, which means my third Rochester Half Marathon is only about six weeks away!

One Day at a Time

On July 13, Dad celebrated thirty years of sobriety. Thirty years! To celebrate that momentous occasion, as well as his upcoming 60th birthday in August, we had a 30/60 party on Sunday afternoon. The clouds cleared off, the sun shown, and friends and family gathered to help us wish Dad well for his next thirty years. The picture above is of Bussey and his cake. There are a ton of pictures from the day here. Congratulations, Dad!

The Greatest Poem Ever Known

Last weekend was Wedge reunion weekend! Not only were Sarah and Matthew home from South Dakota, but Chip, Ravimai, and Caleb were visiting from Alaska, too! I spent most of the weekend in PY with them. The picture above is my favorite – Matthew running through Ed and Sally’s yard with a can of Grape Crush and a purple mouth to match!

Here are a bunch more pictures from the weekend, starting with Matthew ready for some pool action on a (finally) sunny Friday afternoon:

And, finally, SarahBeth Panaro (photo by Mr. Dowd, who is clearly a lot taller than both of us!):

The title of this post is from the poem “To a Child” by Christopher Morley:

The greatest poem ever known
Is one all poets have outgrown:
The poetry, innate, untold,
Of being only four* years old.

*Or, to be more specific, four and three-quarters!

Summer in the City

Last weekend I hopped a flight to DC to spend Fourth of July weekend with Mandy. As you can see from the photo above, most of the weekend involved delicious food, including crepes from Fontaine in Alexandria. Here’s to nutella!

We spent Friday wandering and shopping in Old Town, where we spotted a painting of ex-Republican presidents playing cards (above) and bought hand-made shoes from our new friend Juan (below). Yes, I bought those ridiculous orange shoes I’m holding!

On Friday night we went to Capitol Hill, where we had a barbecue at Mandy’s friend Amy’s house. Here’s a shot of Mandy with one of Amy’s crazy, adorable pugs, Brody:

Sunny, hot (to me!) Saturday was spent at a water park in Manassas with Pete and Keri. Lots of sunshine, good books, greasy food, and a few turns on the Lazy River. A fantastic way to spend the Fourth! Here’s a shot of a giant umbrella and blue sky at the park:

We met up with Keri and Pete again for a lazy, delicious dinner at Food Matters…

…and then headed to Keri’s to watch the fireworks. (We were far too sunburned and exhausted to trek into the city to watch the big show on the Mall.) Unfortunately, we were only able to see bits of fireworks between (and above) the surrounding buildings. Even so, it was a great holiday, filled with good friends, good food, and good times. Good, good, good. (That one is for you, Sarah W-M.)

On Sunday, we spent part of the day with Howard and Grace (no photos, darn it!), where we told family stories, laughed until our stomachs ached, and in between managed to eat about a thousand pounds of curry chicken and another hundred slices of pavolva. Yum!

Tomorrow I’m off to PY to spend the afternoon/evening with my favorite four-and-a-half year old, Mr. Matthew Charles. Pictures to follow!
