I went to South Dakota, and I came back again! Here’s a picture of me and Matthew Charles with a friend in a two-seater outhouse at Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. It was a whirlwind trip, but one of those vacations that is both so much fun and so relaxing that you don’t want it to end (or maybe that was because I adore Matthew so much – and I like his mom and dad quite a lot, too!), except that I was ready to sleep in my own bed, and I missed The Bean!
Arrived in the Black Hills on Wednesday, and we spent the afternoon hanging out at the Wedge/Merrill house, playing swords, watching Buffy, and eating a delicious dinner of Chicken Beans and Casserole. Spider-man even put in an appearance:

On Thursday, we visited Reptile Gardens, where we saw alligators, crocodiles, tortoises, birds, and prairie dogs. Matthew picked out his own outfit, which he models here (with Mom):

After some climbing at the Dinosaur Park, we met up with Kevin for a yummy dinner at The Firehouse in downtown Rapid City, where I also met Franklin Pierce (young and fierce, the man without a chin):

Friday was spent in Deadwood, where we climbed (and climbed and climbed) up to Mount Moriah cemetery, spent too much money on slot machines (and a few dollars at the blackjack table – thanks for the lesson, Kevin), did some souvenir shopping, and – the point of our trip – saw Davy Jones in concert!

On Saturday we took a driving tour of Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park, where we saw loads of bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. We even got caught in a bit of a traffic jam (Kevin at the wheel):

There are tons of photos from my trip here. Here’s one last photo of SarahBeth Panaro near Mount Rushmore (look for George’s profile at the top of the shot):

The weekend before the South Dakota Adventure 2009, the family attended the wedding of our cousin Jessie. Lots of pictures in the Summer 2009 album, but here’s a sneak peek of the afternoon: Jennie, what are you doing with that beer?!

Tomorrow is our longest walk of the training season with Gilda’s Club, 10 miles. Less than three weeks til half marathon number five! And as much as I’ve complained about the summer being too cool and rainy, it’s started to feel like October and I’m defintely ready for (as Linds calls it) fall times. Time to start thinking about booking a room for a night or two in York!
